Dan Onorato, the Democratic nominee who visited the Lehigh Valley on Thursday, supports a natural gas severance tax, which he said would fund "wear-and-tear" municipal improvements, green land preservation and the restoration of previous cuts to the Department of Environmental Protection.

If he were elected governor, Dan Onorato would try to do at the state level what he has already done as Allegheny County Executive: re-structure government to run more efficiently and build a job-growing environment.

``I ran the second largest county in Pennsylvania and I've been doing it for seven years,'' the Democratic candidate told a crowd of more than 40 people gathered in the Spaghetti Benders' bar area. ``The state is broke, and we all know that, and you're all broke too. ... We can't raise taxes.''

Ninety years ago today, a group of brave men and women pushed through one of the greatest equalizing Constitutional amendment in the history of the United States. With the passage of the 19th Amendment, women were enfranchised with the right to vote, an important step in moving women closer to equality.

We could not have accomplished this historic feat without a concentrated effort by activists across the country working together for this common purpose.

As we reflect on this momentous anniversary, it is important to also think about what we are striving for in this election year-- are we going to work to ensure that we elect a candidate who will bring us reform and help secure Pennsylvania's future?

The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO gave its seal of approval to the Democrats in each of the state's top races. The group's executive council voted unanimously today to endorse Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato for governor, state Rep. Scott Conklin, D-State College, for lieutenant governor and Congressman Joe Sestak, D-Delaware, for the U.S. Senate.
